Histochemical Study on the Mucosa of the Fowls Respiratory Tract

Abstract
A histochemical study on the mucosa of the fowls respiratory tract was done to demonstrate mucopolysaccharide, nucleic acid (RNA and DNA), alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activity, obtained the following results.
1. Ciliated columnar cells and basal cells of the mucosa were scarcely stained with alcian blue and PAS.
2. Goblet cells of the mucosa were reacted weakly to moderate positive with alcian blue and PAS. 3. Glandular cells of the larynx, trachea and bronchus were reacted strong positive with alcian blue and PAS.
4. Goblet cells of the mucosa and glandular cells were reacted more strong positive to alcian blue
than PAS with mixed staining of alcian blue and PAS (3BR-4BR).
5. The bronchiolar and the alveolar epithelium were reacted with neither alcian blue and PAS at all.
6. Ciliated columnar cells of the mucosa were reacted weakly positive, but basal cells and glandular cells were reacted moderate positive with RNA and DNA. The bronchiolar and the alveolar epithelium were nil to scarcely reacted with RNA, but reacted weakly positive with DNA.
7. Ciliated columnar cells of the mucosa were scarcely positive with alkaline phosphatase activity, but basal cells and glandular cells weakly to moderate positive reaction. Epithelial cells of the bronchiole were reacted weakly positive with alkaline phosphatase activity, but the alveolar epithelium were not to reacted.
8. Epithelial cells of the mucosa and the glandular cells were not to reacted in acid phosphatase at all.
